The Global Research & Industry Alliance (Gloria) of National Yang-Ming University has conducted a call for proposals orientation through the Gloria Program in the International Conference Hall of Cheng Hsin General Hospital on the 10th of April. The Gloria Program is a program launched by the Department of Industry-Academia Collaboration, Ministry of Science and Technology, and entrusted to National Yang-Ming University for execution. The purpose of this orientation, hosted by Vice Superintendent Ming-Yang Yeh of Cheng Hsin General Hospital, was to assist medical institutions in commercializing their clinical research products. Close to a hundred of medical personnel have participated in the orientation and were enthusiastic about exchanging opinions.

Superintendent Jeng Wei of Cheng Hsin General Hospital started the orientation by encouraging the front-line staff of Cheng Hsin General Hospital to help more patients through innovation when encountering a clinical work bottleneck. He also believed that both academic research and innovative industrial ideas cannot be implemented on the spur of the moment; long-term planning is necessary. The patent application requires even more integrated planning. Furthermore, the approaches to improve clinical processes can be realized through the industry-academia collaboration to make medical progress.

Superintendent Jeng Wei of Cheng Hsin General Hospital talked about his own experience in discussing cooperation with companies. He recommended people intending to industrialize their products not to forget their original intentions for money.

In his opening remarks, President H. S. Kuo declared that National Yang-Ming University has been aiming to treat and care for patients ever since its establishment 44 years ago, and will be aiming to participate in the industry-academia collaboration and boost the economy in Taiwan in the future. In the past, doctors generally practiced medicine to save people rather than to make a profit. The significance of medical product commercialization, which contributes to society more, therefore lies in life extension, not making money.

President H. S. Kuo of National Yang-Ming University suggested that the funding for “research publication” and “product commercialization” should come from different sources. Research publication should be funded by the government, while product commercialization requires industry assistance.

Vice Superintendent Shen-Kou Tsai of Cheng Hsin General Hospital claimed that experts need to keep a close eye on the proposals submitted even when there are insufficient budgets. However, he was confident that the research funding provided by the Global Research & Industry Alliance of National Yang-Ming University would encourage more people to submit high-quality proposals.

Director Chiou-Chung Yuan executed a research project in 2018 to improve the accuracy of ovarian cancer imaging interpretation using graphene. He has found a correlation between tumor markers cancer antigen 125 (CA125) and cytokeratin 19 (CK19), and ovarian cancers, and will continue the research this year.

The team has also collaborated with Academia Sinica, National Yang-Ming University, and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology on research projects. They are currently planning to design assistive device Apps with the Graduate Institute of BioMedical Engineering of National Yang-Ming University and conducting research on chips with the Graduate Institute of Electrical Engineering of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The goal is to make hearing assistive devices more user-friendly and practical.

With the assistance of a professional team, declared Superintendent Jeng Wei of Cheng Hsin General Hospital at the end of the meeting, the industry-academia collaboration will yield more fruitful results. The Global Research & Industry Alliance of National Yang-Ming University is one such professional team that offers advice and assistance concerning industry-academia collaboration. Superintendent Jeng Wei’s team has three proposals at present, which can be submitted to this round of call for proposals. He encouraged his colleagues to continue to innovate, improve, research and develop, and seize the opportunity and submit proposals. President H. S. Kuo of National Yang-Ming University has successfully established three industry-academia collaborations between National Yang-Ming University and Cheng Hsin General Hospital in 2018 through the assistance of the Global Research & Industry Alliance led by Dr. Hsien-Chih Pei, who possesses extensive experience in industry-government-academia collaboration. It is hoped that the partnership between the two institutes will be even closer in the future.
